Frequently Asked Questions

I regularly consult on criminal cases involving trauma histories, competency issues, and mental state defenses. In civil matters, I evaluate emotional damages and workplace discrimination. My expertise includes cases where racial, gender, or cultural factors may impact psychological assessments.

Ideally, 60-90 days before trial to allow adequate time for evaluation, report preparation, and deposition. Even more lead time is preferable for complex cases or when multiple evaluees are involved. However, I understand that legal timelines can be unpredictable and will try to accommodate urgent requests when possible.

Three key differentiators:

1) My specialized training in trauma and its intersection with cultural factors,

2) My rigorous adherence to evidence-based assessment methods while remaining attuned to individual contextual factors, and

3) My ability to communicate complex psychological concepts clearly and effectively in legal settings.

I dedicate a small portion of my practice to pro bono work, particularly in cases involving underserved populations. Please get in touch with my office to discuss availability and case specifics. I also offer reduced rates for public interest cases when possible.

What Legal Professionals Say

“I recently used Dr Cooper on a case. She was thorough, efficient ,and easy to work with. Her report was well-written and understandable. Her testimony was well-received by the court. But most importantly, she was able to draw out the client, put him at ease, and relate a compelling narrative. Thanks in large part to Dr Cooper, this young man had dinner with his family that night instead of being transported to a prison for a lengthy sentence. I recently used Dr Cooper on a case. “I have had the opportunity to work with Dr. Woody Cooper on one of my cases. It’s safe to say she was a great help. As criminal defense attorneys, it’s easy for us to get distracted by the facts of a case and try to resolve that case solely based on what we think the prosecution can or cannot prove. What Dr. Woody Cooper helped me understand was that there often are deeper issues defense attorneys need to address when dealing with an individual charged with a criminal offense. It’s important to understand an individual’s past experiences often play a major role in their current behaviors. Dr. Woody Cooper’s involvement in that case helped me come up with alternative defense strategies to better advocate for my client. Client-centered advocacy is extremely important and Dr. Woody Cooper can help you take that approach successfully in resolving your cases. “

— Widner Saint-Cyr, Founder of Saint’s Law Firm, PLLC | Licensed Trial Attorney in Missouri & Florida

“As a criminal defense attorney, I find it immensely valuable to consult with a psychologist when a client has a history of mental illness or even when there a signs that the client may have been suffering from a some type of mental disease or defect at the time of the offense. In cases where the facts clearly point to the fact that your client did commit the offense of which they are charged, I think it is negligible to not explore mental illness as either a defense or possible mitigating factor to the offense committed. Consulting with a psychologist can many times shine a bright light on a case where as a defense attorney you may feel completely in the dark about the prospects of a favorable outcome for a client. I’ve found that some prosecutors are also concerned about the mental state of a defendant at the time of an offense. Consulting with a psychologist to conduct a forensic evaluation can many times provide the rationale that the State needs to provide an outcome to a criminal defendant that they might not otherwise considered without the expert opinion of a trained and experience psychologist. “
